IPL Frequently Asked Questions
What is IPL?
IPL stands for Intense Pulse Light (IPL). The beam of light targets the melanin in the hair shaft, disabling the hair follicular cells that are responsible for hair growth.
How does IPL work
IPL works by emitting light that is absorbed by the hair pigments and turned to heat. The heat destroys the cells responsible for hair growth, to achieve long term hair reduction.
Which body areas can be treated?
Almost any area of the body can be treated with IPL and the most common areas Olli Skin treats are the legs, bikini line, underarms, back, back of the neck, upper lip, chin, stomach, face, and chest.
Is IPL treatment suitable for me?
The ideal IPL client is fair skinned with dark hair, but results can still be achieved for different hair and skin types. Darker hair responds better to treatment as it contains more melanin and will heat up more easily. Fairer hair is harder to treat as it contains less melanin. Treatment for white or grey hair is usually ineffective as it contains no melanin.
During your consultation your therapist will determine your skin type and develop a treatment plan specific to your hair colour and skin type. We can also conduct a ‘patch test’ to determine the likely effectiveness of treatment. Olli Skin offers a free IPL consultation and patch test to determine your suitability and response to IPL.
How do I prepare for the treatment?
We recommend you:
What is the treatment process?
What does the treatment feel like?
You may feel a warm tingling feeling or a slight pinch (similar to a rubber band snap), which will continue until the area is fully treated. Clients with darker and thicker hair may be more sensitive to the tingling sensation.
How long do the treatments take?
IPL treatment times vary depending on the treatment area. Some areas can be treated in 15 minutes, whereas other areas such as the legs or back may require 30-60 minutes. We can advise you of the approximate time required for your treatment.
How many treatments will I need?
The number of treatments depends on the treatment area and will also vary from person to person. An average of 8-10 sessions is typical for most people to permanently reduce hair in the bikini and underarm areas. However, various factors can influence this including the colour of your hair and skin, hormone levels, hair follicle size and hair cycles.
Do I need to take precautions after treatment?
Can IPL burn or damage my skin?
IPL has been used for many years and is a safe and effective form of hair removal. It uses no UV light so there is no cancer risk.
Most people experience some tenderness and mild redness in the treated area shortly after treatment, but this usually subsides with a day or so. In some cases, the redness may last longer, but will still be temporary.
